In a diverse practice that comprises painting, sculpture, drawing, and installation, William J. O'Brien combines intuitive gestural marks with repetition and grid structure to create a tension between order and chaos. His ceramic objects—part vessel, part body and part abstract form—are arranged in tabletop installations and also become models for his drawings. Vibrant triangles, circles, aggressive loops and marks create a compelling sense of chaos. Crazed faces, reminiscent of Willem de Kooning’s Women paintings, emerge from the densely layered images.
