Valerie Favre
Born 1959
Valérie Favre (b. 1959 in Evilard, Switzerlad. Lives and works in Berlin.) understands painting to be its own language, and it is the disruption that happens at the point of translation from idea to form that drives her artistic practice. She often paints in series, in an effort to capture the process of the temporal and to become intimate with her subjects and motifs. The challenge of depicting the “unutterable” is at the heart of Favre’s self-concept of an artist. She is not bothered by things that are easily represented. She doesn’t work with preparatory drawing and literally draws her figures out of the canvas with layers of color. In her paintings Favre explores themes about the role of the artist in society as well as traditional assignment of gender roles in ever new compositions and groups of works. At the center of her imagery is the tragicomedy of the human existence, graspable in myths, and saturated with literature, philosophy, film and art history. In her paintings Favre often makes references to central positions of early twentieth-century art quoting specific paintings and the symbolism of artists such as Pierre Bonnard, James Ensor, Giorgio de Chirico or Odilon Redon, in a way to negotiate contemporary issues. Painting is for Valérie Favre, who also works in sculpture and drawing, a sensory medium and a method of conceptually addressing certain questions that are to her. Selected Solo Exhibitions include: Neue Galerie, Gladbach, Germany (2018); Musée d'art et d'histoire, Neuchâtel, Switzerland (2017); Musée d’art moderne et contemporain, Strasbourg, France (2015); Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin, Germany (2013); Kunstmuseum Luzern (2010). In 2012 Valérie Favre was shortlisted for the renowned Prix Marcel Duchamp in France. In 2020, she will have a solo exhibition at Galerie Pankow.
