Sven Drühl
Born 1968 • German
Sven Drühl investigates and re-elaborates Modern and Contemporary Art History’s landscapes and architectural designs. In his paintings and in the works with neon lights he alludes to already existing artworks by other artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Ferdinand Hodler or by fellow contemporary artists. He works on the landscape in a nonconventional way, employing silicone and latex in addition to traditional materials, giving three-dimensionality to the canvas. During the last decade he intensely worked following the Japanese New Print Movement, known as Shin Hanga, which originated during the 1910s in Japan. In this last series of works he undertakes a new artistic method inspired by virtuality and videogames textures, reproducing landscapes which look like they are entirely real. As it happens with textures in computer graphics, in his artworks the artist follows a mathematical structure; the composition is well organized and the pattern repetition is cyclic. The canvas follow a clear strictness and his technique creates more detailed and realistic landscapes by working on lines and shading. The expression and the signs of the lines make sense when hit by light because they come alive and the individual details, from simple quotes, produce new landscapes. Sven Drühl was born in Nassau (Germany) in 1968 and lives and works in Berlin. His work has been displayed throughout Europe, Asia and USA; his solo shows include: Simulacra, Galerie Tony Wuethrich, Basel, Switzerland (2017); Permutation, Caspar-David-Friedrich-Zentrum, Greifswald (2017); Shin Hanga - Japanische Landschaften, Kallmann-Museum, Ismaning (2016); Die Erfindung der Landschaft, WIMMERplus, Prien (with Hiroyuki Masuyama) (2015); Architekturen, Haus am Lützowplatz zu Gast im IG Metall-Gebäude, Berlin (2014); Shades of Grey, Galleri S.E., Bergen, Norway (2010); Landscapism, Michael Schultz Gallery, Seoul, South Korea (2008); Chimären, galerie im park, Burgdorf, Switzerland (2004); Remix, Fassbender Stevens Gallery, Chicago, USA (2002). Among the main group shows: New Black Romanticism, National Museum of Art of Romania, Bucharest, Romania (2017); InterWalls, Galerie Tony Wüthrich, Basel, Switzerland (2017); Passion - Fanverhalten und Kunst, Stadtgalerie Kiel, Berlin (2016); Under Construction (B)erlin, Opere Scelte, Torino, Italy (2015); Alptraum, Salon de Lirio, Goa, India (2015); Alptraum, Visual Voice Gallery, Montreal, Canada (2015); Berlin - Klondyke 2011, Art Center Los Angeles, USA (2011); Culture(s) of Copy, Goethe Institut, Hong Kong Arts Center, Hong Kong, China (2010); De Natura, Centre d’Art Contemporain, Meymac/Limoges, France (2005).
