Sinan Tuncay
As an artist working in both photography and video, I use both taken and found images to make photographic collages that are influenced by Ottoman manuscript illustrations. Projecting gigantic into miniature; public into private; self into other, my work seeks to deconstruct gender norms in the Islamic cultural landscape, which are fetishized around female virginity and the heteronormative image of male.
Sinan Tuncay is a multimedia artist and director based in New York. Born in 1986 in Istanbul, he received his BA from Sabanci University in Visual Communication Design (2010) and his MFA from the School of Visual Arts in Photography, Video and Related Media (2013). The very first music video he designed and directed for the Turkish 'Piaf', Sezen Aksu, has been nationally awarded as the best music video of 2012, by 18th Turkey Music Awards and 39th Golden Butterfly Awards. His video installation project, titled 'Mommy's Not Home' has been acquired to Istanbul Museum of Modern Art's collection in 2013. He was selected as one the 50 international artists to participate 'reGeneration3: New Perspectives on Photography', a touring exhibition and publication project held by Musée de l’Elysée in 2015, with his series 'Public Intimacy'. His first solo show, 'I'm sorry, Leyla' was opened at United Photo Industries in New York, in 2016. The same year, he has been awarded a fellowship in Photography by NYFA. Sinan lives and works in New York and his work is represented by C.A.M. Gallery, in Turkey.
