Marcel Stewart is an abstract artist and a native Detroiter. Marcel practiced figurative art from 2005-2009 while later discovering his ability to express himself through visual arts. He has been a self-taught artist since then (2009). The style of painting Marcel exercises is abstract expressionism. While there is no reference photo, the reference is the artist’s imagination and creativity. Marcel’s original paintings are his ideas, emotions, and thoughts depicted on a surface. This is his individual way of expressing himself while inspiring others to do the same. While researching late work from Mark Rothko and the way he used his color-field methods to express his emotions in an abstract manner, Marcel attempts to use Rothko’s theories to his color-field abstract works while creating his own color-field abstract backgrounds. He has also done some extensive research on the lyrical abstract artist, Jackson Pollock. Pollock inspires his work by the lyricism used while creating his pieces. In the foreground of Marcel's works, he expresses his emotions in an intuitive manner to show a beautifully composed abstract piece that depicts depth and the test of creativity because true creativity has no bounds. Marcel has received a scholarship to attend the College of Creative Studies in 2009, and he is currently the artist in residence at Umoja Fine Arts Gallery in Southfield, MI since 2020.
