Laura Bell
Laura Bell's paintings and mixed-media work have been shown in New York, Provincetown, New Haven, Chicago, Philadelphia, Berlin, and elsewhere. She has been awarded a 2020 Bronx Council on the Arts BRIO grant in painting, and has been an artist-in-residence at the Millay Colony for the Arts. Laura attended Douglass College, Rutgers University, where she studied with Fluxus artist Robert Watts, who gave her a deep appreciation for the spontaneous and serendipitous, and with ceramic sculptor Ka Kwong Hui, whose sense of the relationships of forms went far beyond the clay studio. She then did graduate work with painter Anne Tabachnick at Goddard College, in Vermont. Her ongoing collaborative collage project, "The Corpses," with poet Ian Ganassi, can be viewed at thecorpses.com. Laura lives and has her studio in the Bronx. From her artist's statement: "I often bury the elements I use as grounds—laser prints of photos, found images, magazine pages, cut paper—but I feel the pulse they create, the call-and-response with the paint. The picture plane is frequently fractured and in flux. Images are generally a slow burn, not immediately decipherable but always the provocation for the brushstrokes around and over them: cutouts of a Rockaway warehouse skylight ("Bug Boogie"), an auto-wrecking yard and a Mars Rover ("The History of the World"), endangered birds and magazines ("Endangered Species"). Always in view, no matter the media, is that click of significance, when some thing becomes something entirely else."
