John Davies
Born 1946
John Davies, born in Cheshire in 1946 is a sculptor, painter, and teacher. He attended Hull and Manchester Colleges of Art and later moved to the Slade, London before winning a sculpture fellowship at Gloucester College of Art. Davies’ practice is mainly focused on the depiction of the human figure, with works often installed in groups to suggest particular relationships. His work varies is medium and scale and he is noted for the fine details in his sculpture which bring the further human emotion to the work. His first major exhibition took place at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1972, where he exhibited again in 1975. Other exhibitions include the 8th Biennale de Paris in 1973; Documenta VI, in Kassel, Germany; 3rd Sidney Biennale in 1979 and The Hard-Won Image at Tate Gallery in 1984. He won the Salisbury Award in 1990 and examples of his work are held by the British Council Collection, Arts Council England Collection, and Tate Gallery. After relocating to Greece in the mid-1990s, Davies is now based in London.
