Jen P. Harris is a Los Angeles-based artist working across painting, installation, works on paper, and collage. Drawing from the visual material of many archives, she layers disparate images and subjects to upend expected categories and hierarchies, with the aim of unsettling her own preconceptions through rupture and improvisation. Harris was born in Virginia and completed her undergraduate studies at Yale. She attended the Yale-Norfolk Summer School of Art and the International School of Art in Umbria (Italy) before earning her MFA at Queens College of the City University of New York. In 2012 she was awarded a Fellowship in Painting from the New York Foundation for the Arts. Harris’ work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the US, including New York, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Milwaukee, and Des Moines. Her projects have received support from the Puffin Foundation; Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice; Women’s Studio Workshop; and the Iowa Arts Council.
