Jan Breughel The Younger

Jan Brueghel the Younger was a Flemish painter best known for being the son of Jan Brueghel the Elder and grandson of Pieter Brueghel the Elder. His Baroque landscapes, allegories, and mythological scenes were made with light tones and are highly detailed. Born on September 13, 1601 in Antwerp, Belgium, the artist was trained by his father and often made copies of his father’s works, which he later sold. Brueghel made commissions for both the French court and the Austrian court before returning to Antwerp, where he collaborated on paintings with Peter Paul Rubens and David Teniers the Younger, among others. Brueghel died on September 1, 1678 in Antwerp, Belgium. Today, his works are in the collections of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, among others.
