Biography

Guillermo Kuitca is a contemporary Argentine artist best known for his paintings of geographical maps and architectural plans. Although Kuitca’s works are not overtly political, their theatrical nature seems to reference themes of loss and migration. “What I believe makes painting so interesting and such a battleground is the mere fact that it has been declared dead,” he has explained. “I cannot see another medium in which one can explore with such an incredible freedom.” Born on January 22, 1961 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he began painting from an early age. In the late 1980s, the artist produced installations based on typographies that explored themes of public and private space, memory, and migration. Kuitca represented Argentina at the 2007 Venice Biennale with his Diarios series. The series is composed of circular canvases that he stretched over a table in his studio, covered with debris, doodle on, walked upon, and sliced holes into. The artist continue to live and work in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, among others.
