Carlos Silva
Born 1930
Carlos Silva was born on 13 November 1930. The literary world was the first field in which he started to experiment, to later immerse himself into drawing and painting, becoming one of the Argentinean pioneers in Geometric Abstraction. Not only his remarkable talent but also his broad-minded, unprejudiced family encouraged him to develop a consistent career; rich not only in professional achievements but also in artistic discoveries, which helped him obtain national and international acknowledgment. Self-educated, Carlos Silva attended classes for only three months at Vincent Puch workshop, where he spent time with Carlos Alonso, Fernandez Muro and Sarah Grillo. That brief training in painting, together with several years of self study and experimentation on his own warehouse, helped him to create an absolute technique with a mathematic structure base, which gave life to hundreds of complex art works, which were genuine in composition and treatment. The worldwide recognition to his work, not only in Argentina but also abroad, helped him to receive important awards, such as the national prize from “Torcuato Di Tella Institute” in 1965; the grand acquisition prize from the “Lorenzutti Trust” in 1968; the “Konex” award in 1982; among others. He also took part in the several important exhibitions in galleries and museums worldwide. Some examples include the MOMA in New York, the Sao Paulo Biennale and Knoll gallery in the US. He died in Buenos Aires on 12 June 1987, leaving a collection of paintings of wide importance that made him one of the most talented and relevant artists in Argentina in the 20th century.
