Ben Pederson
Biography
Ben Pederson’s work is an amalgamation of collaged-together modernist sculptural-troupes. Dripping or entangled with textures, these objects are in flux. They reference an incomplete process — a captured animation still — a frozen moment just before some otherworldly transmutation is allowed to complete itself. His Romantic and intuitive approach to manifesting these objects and images also centers on transition and the in-between. Imperfect, Alien Platonic worlds are mined for their artifacts, becoming further corrupted or fantastic in their transition into this dimension. Pederson was born in 1979 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and received his B.A. in Studio Art from Aquinas College in 2003. He went on to obtain his M.F.A. in Sculpture from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2007. After graduate school, Ben moved to New York where he works as an art handler and continues to make and show work locally and nationally. In 2013 Ben was invited to be the resident artist at Materials For The Arts in Queens, NY, as well as a participant at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. In January of 2015 he was a resident at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, NY. In January of 2018 Ben received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and in January of 2019 had his first solo show at Ortega Y Gasset Projects in Brooklyn.
