Stephen Aifegha
My name is Stephen Aifegha, I was born in Lagos state; the western part of Nigeria often known as the New York of Nigeria, due to its metropolitan structure backed up with the daily hustle and bustle. My artistic practice is influenced by my identity and culture as an African, being born and raised in Nigeria; however, I like to identify myself more as African than “Nigerian”. I am a mixed media artist who uses original African fabrics and newsprint as a major element in my art, the African fabrics is used to show my identity as African and also give an insight that my subject or narrative concerns issue regarding the African continent and its diaspora, and then the newsprint at the other hand; I use to fine texture and also make social commentary. Both the fabrics and newsprint put together creates a feeling of dynamism to the viewer. • However, my subject matter and narrative as a mixed media artist center on historical, social, cultural issues that concerns Africa in regard to cultural syncretism, identity issues, culture clash, and pride. • My art is sort of activism regarding the problem and issues faced by the continent of Africa which draws backs to pre-colonial and post-colonial history in reference to the setbacks it has caused for Africa today. I’m motivated by my pan-Africanist identity and believe which made me seek deeper into my roots and origination not only as a “negro” but an African who now lives in the diaspora; as I began to develop an interest in issues related to culture, tradition, existentialism and history as a primary source of my inspiration towards making art. Pan-Africanism is, however, the principle or advocacy of the political union of all the indigenous inhabitants of Africa, it is also a worldwide movement that aims to encourage and strengthen bonds of solidarity between all indigenous and diasporan ethnic groups of African descent, so therefore this movement has influenced my art or is a major influence in my artistic practice. So far since I began my art quest I have been ably broadening the outreach and redefine the “culture” through my art practice and exhibitions like; a trip to Africa (an African night exhibition) and the road to Africa(a black history month exhibition which highlighted the story of Africans in the well-executed collection, these exhibitions primarily defined and visualized my philosophy and vision which states; it is time for Africa people-powered highway, a highway that will connect the diaspora and motherland, a global highway for African people all over the world to discover themselves and to remember that the only thing that unites black people globally; the only thing we have in common, is that we are Africans.
