Francisco Salazar
Born 1937
Francisco Salazar (b. 1937) is a Venezuelan artist that traveled to Paris in 1967 where he caught up with compatriot Jesus Rafael Soto. There he dropped the modernist-inspired landscapes he began at University and adopted an optical abstraction that he would become known for. His main artistic development has been around the optical phenomena of light on white plains and corrugated paper. He had early success with participation in XXVII Salon Oficial de Arte Venezolano at the Museo de Bellas Arte in 1967, the Salon Arturo Michelena, Ateneo de Valencia in 1967, the Paris Biennial in 1967 (first prize winner), the Bienal de Codex, Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1968 (first prize winner), and the Bienal de Cotejar, Medellin, Columbia in 1969 (second prize winner). He was a member of the Salon de Realites Novelles in Paris from 1992-2004 and participated in their annual exhibitions during that time. He has had solo exhibitions at Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Caracas in 1980, a retrospective of his work spanning 50 years at the Museo de Arte Acarigua-Araure in 2007, and at the Sala Mendoza in Caracas in 2008. There are two constants in his work throughout his career: absolute white and relief. There is clear communication between geometry, space, and light in Salazar’s proposal of space as art, in which he superimposes plains and creates visual kinetics.
