Kenneth Price
Born 1935
Ken Price was an American artist best known for his small-scale ceramic sculptures which resembled biomorphic blobs, sliced geodes, and surreal teacups. Derived from Mexican-folk pottery, geology, erotic objects, and surf culture, Price’s influences were imaginative and eclectic. “You can see the whole piece and all of its surface detail in one glance. So it’s very easy to visualize those pieces as being any size, especially monumental,” he once said of scale in his work. Born on February 16, 1935 in Los Angeles, CA, Price studied at the Chounaird Art Institute and under the ceramicist Peter Voulkos at the Otis Art Institute, before going on to get his MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 1959. After finishing school, Price, John McCracken, and Billy Al Bengston began producing works which are now considered part of the Finish Fetish movement. The artist had his first solo show at the acclaimed Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles in 1960. In 1992, the Menil Collection in Houston mounted the artist’s first retrospective. Throughout the later part of his career, Price maintained a painting and printmaking practice which was similar yet different to his sculptural one, these works often depict small narrative scenes in where monumental versions of his sculptures sometimes appeared. Price died on February 24, 2012 in Taos, NM. Today, his works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art among others.
