Jacques Doucet
Born 1924 • French
The French painter Jacques Doucet was born in Boulogne-sur-Seine in 1924. His internment as a political prisoner during World War II had a lasting impact on his work. After his release from prison he studied at the Montparnasse Academy. In 1947 he met the Dutch artist Corneille, who drew him into the Dutch Experimental Group. Doucet designed the cover for the second edition of the group’s Reflex magazine. In 1948 Doucet joined CoBrA, becoming its contact man and taking part in the famous CoBrA exhibitions in Amsterdam (1949) and Liège (1951). In later life Doucet increasingly favoured an abstract style, experimenting with all kinds of materials. His work featured regularly in exhibitions in France, Belgium, Denmark and The Netherlands (at Jaski Gallery). Jacques Doucet died in Paris in 1994.
