Amoako Boafo
Amoako Boafo is a Ghanaian-born, Vienna-based artist studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria. Combining oil and pastels, on canvas ans paper, Boafo incorporates elements from his daily life into his canvases that are inspired by interlocked social and political issues. His paintings function as an insight into his personal experiences and offer new ways at looking at Blackness. At the same time, his work can be read as resistance against society's racist structures. While re-imagining the genre and traditions of portraiture and centering Black subjectivity and collectivity, Boafo focuses on the lives and realities of Black people in Vienna and abroad. He was awarded the Walter Koschatzky kunst-preise in 2017. His paintings are housed in private collections and public institutions, most recently at The Albertina Museum, Vienna, and the Hessel Museum of Art.
