Gustave Loiseau
Born 1865 • French
Gustave Loiseau was a French painter best known for his Post-Impressionist landscapes utilizing crosshatched strokes to describe light and forms. His work is more similar to the first generation of Impressionists, such as Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, in its focus on changing weather and seasons. Born on October 3, 1865 in Paris, France, Loiseau went on to study first at the École des Arts Décoratifs and then with fellow landscape painter Fernand Just Quignon. He joined the Pont-Aven artist’s colony in Brittany, where he became friends with Paul Gauguin and Émil Bernard, and honed his en trellis technique of crosshatch painting. Loiseau exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants of 1893 and the Impressionist exhibitions of 1890 and 1896. The artist’s works can be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, among others. He died on October 10, 1935 in Paris, France.
