Kai Althoff is a contemporary German artist, best known for figurative paintings rendered in a personal, idiosyncratic visual language. Born in February 1966 in Cologne, Germany, the artist is largely self-taught. He frequently mines both traditional German folklore and everyday life for content in his work, and often references the aesthetic and techniques of early German Expressionism and painters such as James Ensor, Marc Chagall, and Gustav Klimt. In addition to his two-dimensional work, Althoff also explores sculpture, video, and assemblage, frequently combining elements across media to create fully immersive installations and exhibitions. His solo shows include those held at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the ICA Boston, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the Kunsthalle Zürich, among others. He lives and works in Cologne, Germany.
