Kristin Baker
Born 1975 • American
Kristin Baker was born in Stamford, Connecticut in 1975 and now lives and works in New York City. Baker is known for her light-infused, large-scale abstract paintings. Instead of brushes on canvas, Kristin uses squeegees and metal scrapers to move acrylic paint across opaque PVC or acrylic sheets. She often tapes off sections of a painting so she can work on that area alone, sometimes working on several paintings at the same time. Combinations of matte and gloss paint in more subtle or vibrant hues are layered on with the effect showing how differently natural and artificial light might reflect and define flat and deep space. Although her paintings have a whimsical and light quality, her process is carefully planned and executed. Exhilarating speed, movement, and colorful shards of translucent color are among the signature elements Kristin Baker incorporates in her pieces to emulate the interplay of light, motion, and space.
